Colonel Thomas C. Devin, USA. Cavalry Brigade Commander and nicknamed “Buford’s Hard Hitter”. On the morning of July 1, 1863, Devin's brigade was dismounted and held against Heth’s advance for 2 hours against superior numbers. Their position was just west of the Doubleday Inn. With the arrival of the 11th Corps, Devin’s Brigade moved to hold the approach of the York Pike.
