Brigadier General Gabriel R. Paul, USA, Commander of 1st Brigade, 2nd Division, 1st Corps, USA. Paul’s brigade was deployed in front of and north of the Doubleday Inn on July 1, 1863. General Paul was shot through the temple and permanently blinded in both eyes during the action near the Mummasburg Road.
